Modern Farmhouse Interior Design | Nash Design Group

Modern farmhouse is one of the most enduring interior design styles of the past decade, and one of the most frequently misexecuted.

At its best it is warm, grounded, and quietly sophisticated: a style that draws on the material honesty of agricultural building traditions and combines it with the clean lines and spatial openness of contemporary design. At its worst it is a checklist of borrowed cues — shiplap, barn doors, apron sinks — assembled without a coherent point of view. The difference between the two is exactly what a skilled designer brings.

Nash Design Group has designed modern farmhouse interiors across the San Francisco Peninsula and Bay Area for over a decade, working with clients who want the warmth and livability of the style executed with precision and restraint.

Modern farmhouse interiors are built on a foundation of natural materials, neutral palettes, and structural honesty.

Exposed beams, reclaimed or white oak flooring, apron-front sinks, vaulted ceilings, and open floor plans are hallmarks of the style, as are the mixing of old and new: a vintage heirloom piece alongside a clean-lined contemporary sofa, an antique light fixture above a modern kitchen island.

The palette runs from warm whites and creams through soft greiges, sage, and earthy neutrals, grounded by matte black or aged bronze hardware and fixtures. Texture does the work that color often does in other styles — linen, shearling, raw wood, stone, and woven natural fibers layered to create depth and warmth without visual noise.

The result, when done well, is a home that feels collected rather than decorated, lived-in from the first day, and built to age gracefully with the family inside it.
